I fully intend to have a very open presidency where all suggestions are encouraged and welcomed with open ears. I also am teeming with ideas I have gathered through the years of discussing EUS issues, ranging from different ways of efficiently distributing our money to improvements to the website to new services to reach students who currently feel alienated.
While smaller projects such as these can be delegated to other, more specific volunteers, there are bigger, fundamental areas that need improvement in the big picture of the EUS The following three points are not only problems I see, but problems I know realistic solutions to and affect all aspects of the society.
Although there are many great new ideas the EUS wishes to take on, there is a severe lack in manpower to be able to do it all effectively. This results in services and events that do not reach their full potential.
Engineers have some of the least time to spare with such a heavy course load. Even if recruitment efforts are doubled, which they have been this past year, the problem cannot be fixed by just throwing more people into the mix.
The best way to tackle this is to look at our structure, a structure that is only two years old and can stand to be re-examined to make sure we using it efficiently. I will be ensuring that between all volunteers, work is properly divided, communication is set up and that the executive are using the tools of delegation properly, holding meetings, and providing leadership training. I will also be connecting them to any external bodies or services that can be of help, be it faculty, the AMS or other student groups.
I have been involved long enough and watched other groups function to see the overall picture as well as specific troubles certain portfolios face and am ready to tackle this with the executive.
Students are often not being connected to the events and services that are most relevant to them. ‘What the EUS does’ is often vague and poorly understood.
Marketing and visibility is far beyond a pretty poster or a flashy Facebook group. It is a group effort among all of the executive and volunteers. It is about understanding what audiences are being missed and taking the time and care to speak to them. It is about not only making EUS operations transparent, but actively projecting them to students.
As president I will ensure my executive are focused not only on creating great events and services, but on effectively connecting them to students as well. The EUS is not being representative of all its students
I must acknowledge the past few presidents for tackling this problem head on. Although many improvements have been made, we still have a long ways to go.
Not only will I be holding office hours and being receptive to any and all comments and suggestions, I will be actively seeking out groups of students who the EUS is not currently working with and encouraging the executive to do the same.
As per my website spew, I’d like to add in an additional goal: to have fun. The EUS should be a fun place, both in involvement and in participation, and I hope to lead by example.
In summary, I intend to listen to your opinions, and combine them with all of my experience and skill to make you a better EUS, and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience :).
